Abstract The Unification of Italy may be celebrated with modern forms of pilgrimage in the places where the Unification was built, places of the collective cultural heritage of our country, connected to the recovery of memory of this past event. In this paper we will analyse the existing literature on the issues of memory and tourism and on the role of tourism in shaping the collective memory and the national identity of a population and we will discuss how the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy are promoting the cultural heritage, both material and immaterial, it has produced.
